Considerations & Potential Complications

Who is a candidate?
Candidates for cell-enriched breast reconstruction include women who desire to undergo surgery to rebuild their breast contour or shape after breast cancer treatment, breast surgery, or other causes.

What can my patients expect after treatment?
Your patients can expect to see a noticeable difference immediately after surgery. The results will be natural looking and feeling. Over time, as your patients heal and the swelling subsides, the results will be even more noticeable. To ensure patient satisfaction, it is important that you evaluate your patients prior to surgery, set appropriate patient expectations, and explain how the different fat grafting options can help to achieve the look your patients’ desire.

What are possible complications with cell-enriched fat grafting?
Possible complications include the risks associated with the medications and methods used during surgery and the risks associated with any surgical procedure, including traditional fat grafting. For breast reconstruction, we strongly recommend the use of imaging (mammogram or MRI) in your pre-operative patient assessment and post-operative patient surveillance to detect any abnormal changes of the tissue.

Does Cell-Enriched Breast Reconstruction increase the risk of breast cancer metastasis or recurrence?
Patients who have received cell-enriched fat grafts have not been found to be at a greater risk of redeveloping breast cancer than those who received fat grafts alone. With access to advanced radiological screening techniques, radiologists can now determine the difference between any calcifications that may form as the result of the procedure and a tumor.

We have evaluated this in a preclinical co-implantation study. The results demonstrated that the addition of ADRCs to the fat graft did not increase tumor growth in either the estrogen receptor-positive or estrogen receptor-negative cells. These findings indicate that the addition of ADRCs to a fat graft in a human is very unlikely to increase tumor growth in the case of a recurrence or metastasis.
